Bishop Abakir

His Grace Bishop Abakir, bishop of the Scandinavian (Nordic) countries, was born on May 4th 1962 in Cairo, Egypt. He received his medical degree from Ain Shams University year 1986. He chose the monastic life and became a monk on January 22, 1992 at the monastery of St. Pishoy in Wadi Elnatroun. Afterwards, he was ordinated as a priest and served in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, between 1999 and 2004. He was chosen and ordinated as a general Bishop on April 30th 2004 by H.H. the Late Pope Shenouda III.

Pope Shenouda established a Coptic Diocese for the Scandinavian Countries and on June 7th, 2009 H.G Bishop Abakir was chosen as the first bishop of the Scandinavian Countries. The diocese consists of Sweden where the seat is located, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Since his ordination the diocese has blossomed and grown with his service. Many new churches were established as well as new priests joined the service in the diocese under his leadership.
